Balayage
Balayage—from the French balayer, to sweep—is a freehand bleaching technique that replaces foils with brush strokes. At Canvas Blend, our Hong Kong balayage treats your hair as a canvas, sweeping brush onto strand to create the seamless, sun-kissed dimension of a long Riviera summer.

The Technique
What is Balayage?
Balayage is the European technique that reshaped colouring globally over the past decade. Traditional methods rely on foils to create sharp stripes; balayage abandons foils altogether—the colourist sweeps bleach onto the surface of the strand, much like painting on canvas. As the bleach oxidises in open air, each strand lifts differently, producing soft, seam-free gradients.
This is the secret behind the so-called Eurasian or sun-kissed look you see on celebrities and Instagram—roots stay close to natural, mid-lengths breathe with light, and the ends glow as if you’ve been sailing all summer.
Our Hong Kong balayage protocol begins with a small test section, calibrating bleach strength and timing to your density, porosity and natural depth. We believe true balayage is not painting everyone the same—it’s placing the light exactly where it belongs on you.

FAQ
Things you may want to know about balayage
What's the difference between balayage and highlights?
Balayage is a hand-painted, freehand technique that creates seamless mid-to-end gradient with no harsh lines, while highlights use foil sectioning for crisper, more dimensional contrast. Read more on our Highlights page.
Does balayage require bleaching? Is it damaging?
Yes, it requires bleaching to lift mid-to-ends. We pair every session with Olaplex bond-repair and low-volume developer to minimise damage, followed by deep post-bleach care.
How often should I touch up my balayage?
Because balayage has no harsh demarcation, you can stretch touch-ups to 4–6 months, making it one of the lowest-maintenance colour choices.
How much does balayage cost at Canvas Blend Central?
Balayage starts from HK$2,180, inclusive of consultation, bleach, Olaplex, toning, care and blow-dry. Final price depends on hair length and density.
