Low-allergen balayage for a nursing mum — zero scalp contact
34-yo nursing mother, freelance · ~2 visits/year

Consultation
Cathy, 34, is a freelance writer—8 months postpartum, still nursing. Her last colour was 11 months ago, before pregnancy; faded old colour lingered at the ends. Her main concern: 'Could lightener absorb through my scalp into breast milk?' We asked her to confirm with her obstetrician that 'colour applied ≥1 cm from the scalp' was acceptable, then designed a fully off-scalp balayage—every product applied 2–3 cm below the root, full Olaplex No.1 + No.2 throughout, with an extra Davines NaturalTech scalp-barrier treatment.
Formula
Lightener: Wella Blondor + 10 vol developer (lowest strength—slower but least damaging). Toner switched to demi-permanent Wella Color Touch (ammonia-free) 8/73 + 7/47, 5 vol. Olaplex No.1 mixed in throughout. Home kit: Olaplex No.3 + Davines Love Smoothing range.
Process
Full 4-hour timeline: 30 min consultation + scalp barrier application → 70 min hand-painted balayage → 40 min processing → 25 min rinse + Olaplex → 25 min demi-permanent toner → 25 min final rinse + treatment → 25 min blow-dry. Mid-session water and snacks—nursing clients need extra hydration and energy.
Aftercare
Guidance for nursing mums: weekly at-home scalp barrier (sample provided); switch to a fully SLS/SLES-free organic shampoo; avoid hot blow-drying—use cool air and towel-pat dry. Recommended next visit pushed to 6–8 months and switch to closer-to-scalp colour only after weaning.
Client Story
Leaving the salon Cathy told us: 'This is the first time in eighteen months I feel like a woman again, not just a mum.' Her husband later messaged to thank us. Six months on she brought a friend (also nursing) — that referral became one of our most treasured sources.
